Derby Grand Prix

Hello again everyone,

so I competed in the Derby GP on the 26th Aug, I competed in 3 events; Flying 200m, 1Km Pursuit and 2km pursuit. We did the 200m in 12.56s and the 1k in 1:15m which put us third for both of them (before other times were factored as they didn't do that on the day) but unfortunately I didn't manage to find out the time we got for the 2km. Thank you to my pilot Cillian Cook and hopefully I'll have more races soon.

European U23 relay Champions

Now very important as an new Olympic event. I was the final leg. Had a slight lead after the 3rd leg so was down to me to win. Just went for it. Felt like i was being hunted by the teams behind. Hard swim Hard bike and Hard run. Couldn't let up really. Won the race and became the European U23 relay champions.

U23 European Champs Individual

Race was shortened to a sprint from Olympic due to the 40C heat. Just missed the break after a brutal swim. Rode hard on the front to attempt to chase a medal but everyone else in big chase pack of 40 seemed to want a run race. Came down to a run race. Ran better that most of the pack to finish 9th overall. Did what I could after the swim but disappointed.

Push Track Training

I've been spending a lot of my time at the University of Bath at the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton push track. This is where I practice pushing a sled on my own and in combination pushes with fellow GB squad members. I'm now preparing for a performance evaluation at Lee Valley Athletics Centre where I'm tested on my athletic ability and ranked amongst other GB athletes. This regular training in Bath is where alot of my GoGold funding is spent, covering my travel and accommodation, without it I'd really struggle to train regularly with the rest of the team!

School Games

Opening Ceremony tonight. I am out for a spin this morning to loosen up after the Alps with my good friend Alec Gregory. We have ridden together since we were 8 years old and are both going to the Games and are both Go Gold athletes. The legs feel OK after France and should see me through the next 6 weeks or so. You can follow all the Games on @_SchoolGames. Good Luck to all Leicestershire Go Gold athletes at the Games.

Masters vs Juniors

Last Sunday down in Milton Keynes at the National Badminton Centre, I took part in a charity day in which the England Juniors from U19 to U17, played loads of matches against ex-England players. It was a really useful day, as we all got feedback from former Commonwealth and Olympians which was extremely helpful. Overall, everyone really enjoyed it and I got to play some really experienced players in both mixed and doubles.

Back to racing!

After a nice short mid-season break where I headed to Thailand to refresh my mind and reset my system, it was time to refocus on my next main races. I raced in a European Junior Cup in Lausanne on the 21st August and at the British U20 Championships on the 28th August and I'm delighted to say I won both races. With two and a half weeks until my final World Junior Championship, in Rotterdam this year, things are certainly heading in the right direction and I'm extremely excited to see how it will go.

First competition of the season

Last weekend was the Leon Paul Summer Open, the first competition after the summer break. This showed for me in the poule round, losing a couple of fights due to some lack of competition rust. I fenced better in the knock out rounds winning my first fight comfortably but then sadly lost to Matt Billing, who came second at the senior nations this year. It was great to get back into competing and I now feel ready for the rest of the season.

Exciting Times!

Really pleased with my GCSE's and it means I'm going to Hartpury College to do my A'Levels and to train more intensively. I have met my new coach John at West Country Swords fencing camp, which was a fab week. I will still train with my old coach in the holidays (hasn't got rid of me just yet) and they are happy to discuss my training together for continuity! I really can't wait to get started now.

Continuing to Train hard

I have been training very hard over the summer holidays and working on increasing my overall fitness. I am now back doing all pieces and preparing for the new competition season to start in September and October.
I am really enjoying getting all my skills back and looking forward to what the next few months have in store for me. Thank you for your continued support over the year.

30th-8th August US Open

Following the British Summer Champs, I travelled to New York with the Welsh National Squad to compete in the US Open. I was just off my pb's, however it was a great experience to race some of the best swimmers in America. Few weeks rest now before training starts again at the end of August!

British Summer Championships, 25th-30th July, Sheffield

Went into this meet after having spent 6 weeks on reduced training due to hip and shoulder injuries. I competed in 4 events (100m & 50m fly & 100m & 50m back), making all four open finals. My best swim was going under the minute for the first time in the 100m fly (just missing out on bronze) and also winning gold in the girls medley relay. Overall, pretty happy considering the lack of training prior to the meet.

New Season

It's the beginning of a new season! The new season promises to be a good one. I will continue to play as part of Leicester mens first team and also the U18 junior squad. High hopes this year in the junior and mens team. Training is underway and the season is looking good, big things to come.

England Athletics National Championships

This weekend I competed at the national championships in Bedford. I had my 400mH heat on Saturday and won comfortably, on Sunday morning was the final and I won the Bronze medal, my time wasn't great as I went off way too fast in the first 200m and didn't have enough left!
I also competed in the 100mH, I had a bad start and first hurdle and this meant I just missed out on qualifying for the final by one place which was a shame.

Holiday Training

I am only a few days away from the School Games athletics and I am getting in the last few training sessions before the event. This is my first year competing at this event and I am excited to see what it's like. I am this year not competing at Bedford for the nationals there due to other commitments but I also think that this is good because it allows me to have full rest ready for the school games.

Summer fitness goals

Last year's summer fitness target was strengthening my legs; this year's is cardiovascular fitness. Shorter fencers - anything less than 6 foot 2 - need to be able to move rapidly throughout their fights to overcome their taller opponents (with longer reaches) using speed and explosive power. This requires hardwork to build up endurance and is why shorter fencers retire from competition earlier than taller ones.

Summer club training

Mansfield Fencing Club where I train is closed for the summer. To keep sparring practice going I have been trekking to the far reaches of the East Midlands - namely OPS fencing club in Peterborough/Oundle. Lots of sparring practice and a fun atmosphere but a long journey from home.

Junior (U20s) Nationals - July 2017

This was a disappointing competition for me. I wasn't able to focus in the poules and with a low ranking before the DEs was knocked out early. Looking back at it I hadn't got back to fitness after AS levels and was subsequently lacking in sparring practice. The summer is being spent on fitness training in preparation for the next U20s event.

Selection for British Fencing Talent Programme - August 2017

British Fencing has revived their talent programme and I've been selected - which I'm excited about. There are residential training camps throughout the year and a promise of ongoing support. Good news.

Training in Hungary - August 2017

As part of my AASE training I did a international training camp for a week in Hungary sweating away in the European heatwave they called Lucifer. The training was hard but good and at the end of the week my fitness, endurance and Hungarian had improved significantly. The fencing was enlightening as I was fighting fencers from around the world, with lots of different styles and peculiar habits - great experience for competing internationally.

Leon Paul Summer Open - August 2017

Winning 3 out of my 5 poule fights left me ranked 27th out of 69 before the DEs. A tense and hard fought DE for a place in the last 32 followed - with me finally winning 15-12. My next fight brought me up against the number 2 seed. I had some good hits but lost 15-8. My final ranking was 24th which given the strength of the field I was pretty pleased with. In the photo I've got the orange shoes - both fencers are off the ground and my opponent has just missed me.

Midland Championships

Last weekend I competed at the Midland Championships. I got the silver medal in the u17 100m Hurdles which was a good result for me and I retained my title of Midland Champion in the u17 400m Hurdles and ran a good time which I feel has set me up well going into the England National Championships this weekend.
Thank you for the supports GoGold!
