5th place at Europeans

Sunday was the final. I was sure the favourite would hit the race hard - but she didn't! I headed the race and didn't want to get boxed in so ran harder than I wanted to. The final 50m my legs went and I came 5th and just missed out on bronze but can't be upset as I felt I'd had a great race and was pleased with my performance. It was not very long ago that I didn't think I would be at the Championships - let alone to be competitive and fighting for a medal.

5th place at Europeans

I have just returned from Poland where I ran in the European U23 1500m. My heat was on Friday and I was nervous before the race as I desperately wanted to make the final. Being ranked 8th quickest going into the Championships I should've made the final but these are tactical races and never go to plan. The first 4 athletes automatically qualified from each heat and then the 4 fastest losers. I shouldn't have worried as I ran a good solid tactical race and qualified in 2nd place in my heat and I was extremely pleased with this.

British Champs

I was invited to run at the British Championships in the 1500m but my coach and I decided that because of my qualification for the European U23's that it would be best to drop this weekend of racing to get in some quality training. It was disappointing because I enjoy competing at the British Champs but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture.

Injury update 3

I have finally had my cast off and am back in a boot so no more crutches! My Consultant is very pleased with my progress and I am only a few weeks away from being able to start some light running again. Am doing lots of swimming and strength and conditioning work in the meantime. It has been a frustrating time.

The ups and downs of racing

Sometimes you have great races and sometimes you end up in challenging situations. It's just part and parcel of racing. On the 17th June, I won the U20 3000m National Championships then I was in the Netherlands for my next triathlon. I finished 2nd behind Richard Murray (4th at Rio 2016) but was given a 10s penalty 200m from the finish. I slipped down to 5th place when I crossed the line to find out that I had incorrectly been given the penalty. Eventually I was reinstated in 2nd but I ended up missing the podium presentation!

Junior women's road race part 2

On the last lap the pace slowed down considerably as riders were preparing for the finish. So with 3 miles to go and having positioned myself near the front I decided to execute my pre race strategy and attack. With my team mates marking the front of the race I was able to get a considerable gap going into the long up hill finish. I held my position all the way to the line to take a comfortable victory.

A win at the Junior women's road race at Bourne part 1

Last weekend was one of not many junior women's road races only. So I was really looking forward to it and I was really happy to get the win.
Here is a short summary of how the race went for me. From the start of the race I kept my position near the front so I could monitor the race and chase down any potential attacks. After the first QOM I made an attack but it was short lived. Throughout the race other riders had the same idea but due to the strength within the main group nothing lasted.

English women's amateur championships

On the 5th of July I competed in the English women's matchplay and didn't play my best as I missed the cut. Apart from that I have been preparing for my next tournament which is the English women's amateur championships at Lindrik GC. After Lindrik i will be going to play in St. Andrews which I came 2nd in last year and I am hoping to get a win this year.

British Nationals

I have started to taper my training programme now and am entering a less intense period of training activity, this is so I am in the best physical condition I can be ready for the British Nationals. The Nationals start on the 25th July at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. The Nationals are the main competition that I have been training for since September 2016 and I am really looking forward to racing hard.

English Schools.

Last weekend I competed at the Alexandra stadium, Birmingham, in the English Schools Athletics event. I competed in the senior girls long jump and got through to the final. I was running a lot faster than I have done this year as two weeks prior I had had niggles in my hamstring, and due to this my run up was wrong. I would of had 2 good jumps but I was over on the board but I managed to jump a a seasons best. I was happy as I feel that I am getting back to my old self.

British Championships

On 2nd July I competed in the British Championships and world championship team trial's. This year the 200m was the most competitive it has ever been with wold class sprinters in the field. In my heat, I felt I could have ran a better bend and worked more coming off the bend but had a great finish to come 3rd with a seasons best of 20.94.

England vs Belgium

I played in a 3 match series against Belgium. As a team we looked to make improvements from the Germany series. We managed to win the first game 1-0 after battling hard and getting a last second winner. We also won the second game 3-1 putting in a good performance. We lost the last game of the series which was very tough physically.

Overall, it was good preparation for 6 nations next week.

England vs Germany

I played in a 3 match series against Germany for England U18. Unfortunately, results did not go our way as we lost all three games. Over the weekend I was able to learn a lot to take forward into future international games and it was good preparation for 6 nations which is coming up soon. Personally, I was able to score a goal in each game which I was really happy about.

English Schools Athletics Championships

I competed at the English Schools Athletics Championships last weekend in Birmingham. It was the 3rd year running I have been selected.
Unfortunately I just missed out of a podium finish and ended up in 4th place. I wasn't happy with my performace as the winner ran a time I have previously run very close to. I will use the experience to build on and hopefully come back stronger at the next major championship! Now for a well earned and needed rest for 10 days.

English schools

English schools was an amazing experience and being a year young I was looking to go as far as I could. Unfortunately, I didn't run the time I wanted to get and didn't qualify for the final. However, it was a great step in the right direction and I hope that next year I can come back stronger and faster and be able to get further in the competition.

Leicestershire and Rutland Single Barrel

Saturday 8th July was the Leicestershire and Rutland Single Barrel Championship held at Normanton Shooting Ground. I scored 97/100 clays, which meant that I won the Junior category . I also finished joint second overall, with the top score of the day being 98/100 clays. The following day I went to Nottingham and District Gun club and shot 297/300 points, which put me joint 4th overall, which I am very happy with as the Home International is only weeks away and I am shooting well at the moment

Road Nationals

Milton Keynes city centre - closed roads and some wicked dead turns meant this was going to be a hard and fast race, and it was. The bunch was strong out from the start and I made a big effort to be near the front and to really take part on the race. Unfortunately the doors completely fell off with about 4 laps to go and that was my race over. I have to be happy with my process as I rode myself to a stand still but not so much with the result.

What a devil!

National Omnium finals at the stunning Herne Hill velodrome. I qualified along with the top 24 under 16 track riders from regions all across the country. A pretty standard kilo started me in 10th place and then a terrible devil - left me quite a way down. It was now project salvage the day! 5th in the scratch and then 8th in the Kerin gave a hope of a 7th overall with a decent points race. I did get 7th overall which I was happy with. Next blog will be about the road Nationals.

School success

On the annual prize giving at my school, Leicester Grammar, I was pleased to be awarded with full colours for hockey. This is a great honour and privilege as I am the first male international hockey player in my school, and was the only year 11 student to get full colours, with the others being in year 13.

Fitness

Now that exams and school have finished, as well as the usual hockey training sessions I have, I am trying to maintain my fitness levels over the summer with cardio work. Furthermore, thanks to the support from Go gold and Everyone active, I am utilising the gym for continual strength and conditioning sessions which will definitely have a positive effect on my hockey.

Performance centre

I have just had a few performance centre training days in June and July, and now that the programme for this year has finished, I am hoping to be selected for the u18 Futures Cup in August from which England selection for u18s will take place. The performance centre has been a new initiative this year as it has replaced the usual JRPC (junior regional performance centre) which took place only in the summer. I have very much enjoyed the programme and have learnt lots from it.

Tour Of Reservoir

Last weekend I raced the Tour Of Reservoir in Newcastle which was part of the Women's National Series. It was a tough 2 days with thousands of feet of climbing and a strong field of women. So I was really pleased to finish 30th overall out of 70 starters and I was 6th junior.
The thing I was most happy about from that weekend was being one of the youngest there at 16, I actually finished the races which were both 60 miles long.

English Schools Bronze Medal

On Saturday 8th July I competed at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham for Leicestershire Schools in the English Schools Championships. I finished third in a strong heat to make the final of the Senior Boys 110mH running a new PB of 14.09 secs. In the final I finished third in a new PB of 13.89 winning a Bronze medal. I was so pleased to have medalled again and run under 14 seconds for the first this year. After injuring my hamstring back in early April I am very pleased with my progress and performance. Thanks again for your support.

Progress

I finally finished my A level exams two weeks ago and it's nice to free up my time. After having a lot of time out due to injury and exams, I got back into the gym this week putting in some work on land. Such as running and light weights. I'm doing a food shop tomorrow to ensure I start eating healthier foods and taking natural supplements like fish oil and Vit C. I'm also looking forward to getting back in the pool and seeing where i'm at this week.
