We believe the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London will inspire people, communities, businesses and other organisations in Leicester and Leicestershire to be the best they can be.

The strategies for Leicester & Leicestershire provide the vision and direction to maximise the benefits for the whole of the sub-region leading up to, during and beyond the 2012 Games.

On the 15th March 2011, over 500 young people from Leicester and Leicestershire took part in a torch relay using the 1948 London Olympic Torch, to celebrate the landmark figure of 500 days to go to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, view the video below:

The Olympic Flame to visit Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland!

The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) today revealed the 1,000 cities, towns and villages on the route of the Olympic Torch Relay. Between 18 May and 27 July, the Olympic Flame will come to within just 10 miles of 95% of the population of the UK.

The Flame will visit iconic landmarks including Loch Ness, Snowdon, Stormont and Stonehenge. Carried by 8,000 Torchbearers, it will also use some more unusual modes of transport including horseback, steam train and even a zip wire.

Every county in England and every Local Authority area in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales will host the Flame. The torch will pass through Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd July on days 45 and 46 of the 70 day journey.Olympic Torch New1.jpg

The street-by-street detail of the route will be confirmed next year, and local residents will be invited to welcome the Olympic Flame in various locations. The Olympic Torch Relay will shine a spotlight on the people and places of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and demonstrate that the Olympic spirit is alive and well.

Local Leaders ~ Get ready to celebrate the Games

If you want to plan a celebration for the Olympic or Paralympic Games, then look no further. London 2012 have launched a scheme called Local Leaders. This provides people across the whole of the UK with the opportunity to get access to ideas, hints and tips to organise their celebrations.

Becoming a Local Leader is really simple. Just provide your email address on the website and once signed up, Local Leaders will receive email updates each month with helpful things such as:

  • Planning guides
  • Decoration ideas
  • Posters to use
  • Save the date cards

'Get Set' Education Programme

Get Set is London 2012's Education programme and is about involving children and young people in the excitment and inspriration of the Games.

The aim of the Get Set network is to bring schools, colleges and non-mainstream learning providers together in a dynamic and inspirational way. They will be encouraged to integrate the Olympic and Paralympic Values into their planning for sustained improvement. In this way the London 2012 Games will leave a lasting educational, cultural and social legacy.

Empowered1
EMpowered Programme

‘EMpowered’ is a termly project which matches the 7 Values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the 7 disciplines in the women’s Heptathlon event.

Children and young people can follow web links to stories that reflect the value or celebrate the top stars in the discipline. They can then submit either a discursive or creative response to have the chance to win a prize supplied by a London 2012 partner organisation.

‘EMpowered’ launched on 7th June 2010 for children and young people in the East Midlands with the value ‘Courage’ and the 100 metres hurdles.
