Leicester-Shire & Rutland athletes battled for county honours at Sainsbury’s School Games Spring Championships

900 talented young athletes and disabled athletes from across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland pitted themselves against each other in an exciting range of competitions at the Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sainsbury's School Games Spring Championships.

The athletes, representing over 50 Schools in 120 Teams, descended on Loughborough University's world class sporting facilities on 23rd April in an action-packed day full of Olympic-style sport and presentations.

The honour of becoming county champions was up for grabs in each of the 15 competitions, as youngsters aged 12-18 years battled it out in 8 sports -Wheelchair Basketball, Learning Disability Basketball, Boccia, Dodgeball, Netball, Indoor Rowing, Swimming, Volleyball. All teams qualified from Level 2 area finals, to participate in this Level 3 County Final Championships.

The Opening Ceremony gave the Championships an Olympic feel with an exciting performance from Sporting Champion John Patrick Acquaviva (Freestyle Footballer) who enthralled the crowd with his skills. Studio 79, a dance group from Regent College, who won the 'Leicester-Shire & Rutland's GOT Talent' Competition, performed their routine which thoroughly entertained the crowd.

School Games Ambassadors Emily Scarratt (England Rugby player) and Sam Ruddock (2012 Paralympic Sprinter) supported the Opening Ceremony and helped to inspire the athletes to to be the best they can be and have no regrets in their performance.

All fired up, the athletes dispersed for 4 hours of competitive school sport, all of which displayed exciting and high quality competition.

The athletes, who were representing the 10 School Sport & Physical Activity Networks (SSPANs), were vying to finish in the gold medal position to help their Partnership in the School Games Medals Table! Determination, Honesty, Passion, Respect, Self-Belief and Teamwork were all on display as the athletes fully represented the School Games Values, to hopefully be crowned 'Spirit of the Games' winners for that competition.

The School Games continues to be made possible, thanks to the ongoing support from our schools, staff, volunteers and young leaders and we hope it continues to go from strength to strength for many more years to come".
