Kurling

Wednesday 27th September

What is Curling?

Curling is a sport in which players slide stones across ice towards a circular target area.

Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy polished granite stones, also called rocks, across the ice towards the 'house', a circular target marked on the ice. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score by for getting the stones to rest closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each 'end', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their eight stones. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends.

Costs

Many 'Try Curling' sessions are free and last approximately one hour, with equipment provided.

Equipment

  • Curling stones are made from granite and weigh around 20kg.
  • Curlers 'sweep' the ice in front of their team's stones to melt the ice slightly using a curling brush.
  • Delivery sticks allow stones to be delivered from a standing position or wheelchair and are available for those with mobility issues.
  • Curlers wear special shoes with one sliding sole to allow them to slide down the ice when delivering the stone.
