Summer fitness goals

Last year's summer fitness target was strengthening my legs; this year's is cardiovascular fitness. Shorter fencers - anything less than 6 foot 2 - need to be able to move rapidly throughout their fights to overcome their taller opponents (with longer reaches) using speed and explosive power. This requires hardwork to build up endurance and is why shorter fencers retire from competition earlier than taller ones.

Summer club training

Mansfield Fencing Club where I train is closed for the summer. To keep sparring practice going I have been trekking to the far reaches of the East Midlands - namely OPS fencing club in Peterborough/Oundle. Lots of sparring practice and a fun atmosphere but a long journey from home.

Junior (U20s) Nationals - July 2017

This was a disappointing competition for me. I wasn't able to focus in the poules and with a low ranking before the DEs was knocked out early. Looking back at it I hadn't got back to fitness after AS levels and was subsequently lacking in sparring practice. The summer is being spent on fitness training in preparation for the next U20s event.

Selection for British Fencing Talent Programme - August 2017

British Fencing has revived their talent programme and I've been selected - which I'm excited about. There are residential training camps throughout the year and a promise of ongoing support. Good news.

Training in Hungary - August 2017

As part of my AASE training I did a international training camp for a week in Hungary sweating away in the European heatwave they called Lucifer. The training was hard but good and at the end of the week my fitness, endurance and Hungarian had improved significantly. The fencing was enlightening as I was fighting fencers from around the world, with lots of different styles and peculiar habits - great experience for competing internationally.

Leon Paul Summer Open - August 2017

Winning 3 out of my 5 poule fights left me ranked 27th out of 69 before the DEs. A tense and hard fought DE for a place in the last 32 followed - with me finally winning 15-12. My next fight brought me up against the number 2 seed. I had some good hits but lost 15-8. My final ranking was 24th which given the strength of the field I was pretty pleased with. In the photo I've got the orange shoes - both fencers are off the ground and my opponent has just missed me.

Midland Championships

Last weekend I competed at the Midland Championships. I got the silver medal in the u17 100m Hurdles which was a good result for me and I retained my title of Midland Champion in the u17 400m Hurdles and ran a good time which I feel has set me up well going into the England National Championships this weekend.
Thank you for the supports GoGold!

Silver in the Eastern area Ranking competition

The other weekend I competed in the Eastern Area Championships which is the last ranking Competition before the year ends in September.

I achieved a Silver medal after winning all my fights through to only just losing in the final to my friend Tom..

Because I achieved ippons in my winning fights I should end the Ippon list in August in 3rd place which is great as I have gone up a weight catergory to the u55kg. This group is hard but with persistance and help from a strength and conditioning Coach I can achieve alot in the next few months competitions.

National County Team Championships

So pleased to have been chosen to swim for Leicestershire at the Inter-County Champs at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on October 8th. The event is short course and early in the new season, but it is really exciting and the atmosphere is fantastic. Looking forward to my races as always.

British Nationals 2017

Overall a disappointing nationals for me but nothing less than I expected due to immense time out of training.

I managed to make the womens open final in the 50m breaststroke to my surprise, even being way off my PB. I didn't manage to final in my other events. Being my first year in open women's it was always going to be fast finals anyway.

Time to wait for my A level results to see where my future for the next 4 years is.

Season planning

This month I have been away on a sports tour for hockey. The last athletics competition I competed in was the English school's competition. At the start of next seasons competitions, I am going to focus on getting my speed up with 60m and 200m in the indoor season and then towards the outdoor season focus on getting down my 100m and 200m times. I would like to do this because if I have the speed over 100m and 200m then I can improve my endurance. My aim for next season is to qualify for the final of English schools.

Leicestershire and Rutland DTL Championships

Saturday 19th August was the Leicestershire and Rutland DTL Championships held at Normanton Shooting Ground. I went out on the first squad, and in very tough and windy conditions shot a 293/300. This score was enough to win Juniors, and also to take the overall County Championship title by 4 points.

In the final 8 for GB Junior Academy

I have received an invite to the GB Junior Academy selection weekend in September. I am so pleased to have made the selection phase as it confirms that the GB coaches have seen that I have some real potential. 8 U16 riders are going to the 3 day selection camp. Fortunately I am not holidaying on a beach in Ibiza, I am undergoing a big block of training in the French Alps so all going well by mid September I should be flying.

Winter training.

I had a conversation with my coach and we agreed that I should start Winter training early; I started this week. Looking forward to the cold months ahead outside at the track and park for all of the early morning hill sessions! I am still keen and the money has been much appreciated.

Thank you.

Moving to America.

With the help of many people, including Go Gold funding, I have made it to Miami in America as I received an athletic schlorship. I have been busy with visiting family and friends, packing, traveling, and moving in to my college dorm. During all the madness, I have been trying to train and keep up my fitness as much as I can, I have been lifting weights 2-4 times a week, and doing hill sprints 2-4 times a week. team practice and workouts will start on the 28th and I am very excited to start this new season.

Bulgarian Senior Open

After the junior I played the senior tournament. In our first mixed game, we played an athlete ranked 12th in the world at doubles who also went to the 2016 Olympics, expecting to come out with a loss. We played at a really high level and managed to come out with the best win of my career so far, the scores being 21-19, 21-11. We won the next round against the Turkish which meant we were in the quarter-finals, however we couldn't quite get the win this time but super happy with our results.

U19 Bulgarian Junior

I've just come back from Bulgaria. First I played the junior tournament where we won our first round in doubles against an Iranian pair, and then had to play a Turkish pair in the second. We lost the first set, and then won the second and unfortunately, we lost by just 2 points in the third and the score ended up being 19-21 to the Turkish. Gutting loss but they went through to win a silver medal so very pleased with our performance. We lost our first mixed game very closely in 3, 21-19, 19-21, 17-21, but another good performance.

Tough start to season

Played two tournaments overseas in the last two weeks.

Played with a German girl in both ladies doubles but drew seeds from turkey (have been ranked inside top 50 in the world) in both tournaments and lost. In mixed had a 54 minute battle against a strong English pair that have won various national medals between them. Score was 21-16, 22-24, 23-21. Really close but unfortunately lost. Back home now and have a couple of tournaments coming up.

Futures Cup

A few weeks ago I was delighted to be selected for the U18 Penine Pumas futures cup team, a year young. The annual competition, starting next week, is where the England U18 squad is selected from, and I will be trying my best to achieve that selection throughout all 3 games.

Inter-Counties

On the 30th of August I represented Leicestershire and Rutland in the inter-counties champions, there were three rounds on the day and I wasn't really up for the task feeling quite tried after a busy week, I came away in 4th place which was disappointing knowing that I am capable of more. We learn from it and on to the next one.
