Mayathon - Be Active, Stay Well, Support a Friend!

Each week there are about 10 million people in the UK who say that their mental health isn't great – and now that we are all having to adapt to live with social-distancing, the need to stay active (and connected) has never been greater.

It's never been more important for people to stay physically and mentally well and to support our friends and family during this period of social isolation and distancing.

mayathon is a new app and website to help people feel healthier, happier and more connected to a friend, family member or colleague. The app is free, easy to use and hopes to help people keep active during these challenging times.

You can also buddy-up (virtually) with a friend, family member, or colleague and support each other to do 26 minutes of exercise a day. You can use the app to support and encourage each other without even having to meet up.

It can be any activity (provided it is done at home or outside following social distancing guidelines) and it does not have to be competitive. It is not a race to see how far or how fast you can go, just do your best to achieve 26 minutes of activity and help your buddy to do theirs.

It's simple, download the free app to join in.

Why is it called Mayathon?

The buddy system is at the heart of mayathon, and the 'may' of mayathon stands for 'me and you'. The 'athon' part stands for marathon, but don't worry, you only need to do 26 minutes, not 26 miles!

Why the number 26?

Physical activity guidelines recommend that you should build up to 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. Fitting a little bit of exercise into each day can help you to reach this target, but if you are new to being active, something is always better than nothing and every minute counts!

How do I sign up?

Just download the free mayathon app from the App Store or Google Play. You'll be asked to enter your email address and to answer two simple questions about how active you are and how you generally feel.

You can join anytime, so it doesn't matter if you miss the start of May, the calendar is open all the time. There might be date-specific 'challenges' throughout the month, but even these can be joined part way through.

Important: Participants must undertake activities in their own home or whilst conforming to the government's social distancing and self-isolation rules. The Government advise that you can leave your house once a day for exercise (to walk, cycle or run) on your own or with members of your household. You should stay 2m away from anyone who isn't part of your household. More advice: www.gov.uk/government/news/coronavirus-guidance-on-access-to-green-spaces

Whilst taking part in physical activity, participants should ensure they take part at a level which is appropriate to them and their health and are responsible for ensuring they check the credentials and health and safety requirements for each activity. It is recommended that participants follow the Chief Medical Officers Guidelines for physical activity. Participants will choose to take part in activities at their own risk.
