Employing a Coach

In order to ensure Excellent Coaching Every Time for Everyone, sports coach UK have worked with key industry partners to agree core standards for all coaches in the UK.

Why are these standards important?

As an active coach, it is important for you to meet the core standards:

  • to ensure you have the right level of qualification, knowledge and skills for your coaching role
  • to safeguard you and the participants you coach
  • to ensure you have the right level of insurance
  • to improve the coaching opportunities you can access.

This sections provides information and resources to support coaching in Schools. Resources have been developed to assist schools in employing and deploying coaches and also in identifying appropriate professional learning for teachers.

Coaching in Schools Toolkit

The Coaching in Primary Schools Toolkit has been developed by sports coach UK in collaboration with national partners - The Association for Physical Education, County Sports Partnership Network, Sport England, UKactive Kids and the Youth Sport Trust.

Through the Primary PE and Sport Premium, primary schools in England have dedicated funding to enhance their PE and school sport offer to children. Around two thirds of schools are using some of the funding to employ external sports coaches. Coaches can perform a valuable role in supporting and up-skilling teachers to improve the delivery of physical education and sport, as well as providing breakfast, lunchtime and after school clubs.

The Coaching in Primary Schools Toolkit aims to help primary schools recruit and develop sports coaches. It provides advice for Head Teachers on how to recruit, develop and use coaches effectively using the government funding.
