Introducing Alison, one of our Active Together Champions!
For me being active keeps my mind and body occupied, so I can forget about COVID and other issues for the time I'm being active. When I work hard it feels good to know that I have done it. Being in the fresh air, with the sunshine on my skin makes me feel happier too. There are 2 activities that I love and they are dancing and walking.
Dancing with it's combination of great music to listen and move to, remembering my routines, creating new ones, being creative, getting out of breath, working the muscles, such variety of dance styles from ballet to Zumba which keeps it interesting and being outside walking, in the fresh air, in the sunshine, looking at nature, watching the plants and animals grow and change over the time makes me feel good.
I would normally dance with children in schools and nurseries and at a local dance school. And with adults at the gym but none of that has been able to continue. Dance is my life and I will get back to it as soon as I can, so I need to stay in shape and remember the routines I use in my classes as well as creating new ones.
Plus keeping active makes me feel less rubbish about things. Sitting and moping is no good for anyone. Spending time on the walks with my husband has been great, just chatting and taking in the fresh air together, which we plan to continue post-lockdown.
My advice if you're thinking about getting more active:
Find something you enjoy and keep doing it, even if you don't really feel like it at the start, you will always feel better after you've done it, and remember that feeling so you can motivate yourself to do it again.
