Introducing Lizzie & Sam, our Active Together Champions!

Lizzie & Sam, Scraptoft

We've always been keen runners, but since lockdown began, we are much more focused on building a running schedule that works well with our family life. We found that being active has been such a positive thing for us both physically and mentally through lockdown - ensuring that we could continue to be happy and healthy parents and people through what was proving to be a difficult time. We found that this time gave us the inspiration to launch a new running channel on YouTube - Mother Father Runner. The channel's main focus is to share advice and inspire others to be active in their family life. We have found being active with others (in person and virtually) to be a hugely important part of our running over the last few months. We initially got involved with multiple virtual challenges with friends, maintaining a social element to our running. Now that track training can resume within our running club (socially distanced of course), we are enjoying getting back to those sessions and being motivated by training with others. Being active has been an essential part of our lockdown. It was a major priority on a daily basis that we both planned when we would be able to get out for a run or bike ride. We also made a conscious effort to discuss and celebrate each other's achievements and distances run. Sometimes when one of us is having a tough morning, we know it is even more important that we create this all important time for one of us to go for a run, to unwind, take our thoughts away from the daily challenges and create some time for yourself. We get a lot of motivation from each other as well as our running community. Through lockdown this has been with friends and through the running app we use, Strava. We have always been an active family, but we feel that by being active it sets the tone for the rest of our lives, encouraging us to eat, sleep and achieve as well as we can. We enjoy the freedom that running brings, the time to yourself, the opportunity to see some of the world and to personally challenge yourself. We are both very focussed on lowering our 5k PBs, running a marathon in the coming weeks and also to running our first Ultra marathon together (100km) during the early months of next year. We also love taking our running buggy out as it provides some great time with the kids. We always ensure we plan in pit-stops to see the cows in the field or to feed the ducks - as well as packing snacks! So that running is a part of family life too. Through lockdown, we have faced multiple challenges that we have had to overcome. Like many families, we have two small children and a small garden so keeping them entertained meant that we had to be very creative. This has really challenged us as to how we could make time for our running. Injury has also posed an issue as Liz unfortunately picked up a hip injury (attributed in part to childbirth) which meant she had 8 weeks off running and then an 8 week period to regain her fitness. This all put a strain on us mentally and a big way to overcome this was to find alternate ways to exercise, we are very lucky that we have a cross trainer in the garage and we have also enjoyed cycling.

Our advice if you're thinking of getting more active:

Find a sport you love and don't be afraid to take that first step and just have a go. Join a club and immerse yourself in the social aspect as you will instantly be surrounded by like-minded people who will be eager to help, encourage and celebrate your endeavours in your chosen sport. Be patient, it takes a while to build fitness and get to know a sport properly. Enjoy the opportunity to learn something new.
