Moving Healthcare Professionals

Moving Healthcare Professionals is a national partnership programme between Public Health England and Sport England. It is designed to support healthcare professionals to promote physical activity to their patients.

The Moving Healthcare Professionals Programme is making a difference in a few ways, but Leicester-Shire & Sport (LRS) are supporting two key elements locally:

1. Training existing healthcare professionals - supporting the coordination of practical peer-to-peer training to existing (or trainee) healthcare professionals on physical activity and how to incorporate this advice into practice (for more information about how to access training for your organisation, please see below).

2. Development of resources - Moving Medicine is an evidence-based healthcare professional physical activity resource that provides literature on the importance of physical activity in the management and prevention of disease and advice on how to bring up conversations about physical activity that are tailored to the patient. Please click on the link below for a local guide to this resource.

  • Moving Medicine Healthcare Professional Information (LLR) Moving Medicine Healthcare Professional Information (LLR) (PDF, 350 Kb)

This document summarises information on how health care professionals can access support to help them signpost patients to local activities, arrange training for staff and obtain physical activity resources for their practices.

Why?

  • 1 in 4 patients would be more active if advised by a GP or nurse
  • Healthcare professionals can reach a large proportion of the population (1 in 10 people visit their GP every 2 weeks)
  • Those working in the healthcare profession are seen as a trusted source of advice, what they say about physical activity can have a big impact on activity levels
  • Those who regularly engage with healthcare professionals (often those with or at risk of long-term health conditions) are more likely to be inactive
