Dressage Champion Charlotte Dujardin wins Sportswoman of the Year

Olympic dressage champion Charlotte Dujardin has been named Sunday Times & Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Year. The 29-year-old won gold in the individual and team events at London 2012 on-board Dutch gelding Valegro. She also collected freestyle and special titles at world and European level and won at the dressage World Cup finals in Lyon in April.

Gymnast Claudia Fragapane won the young sportswoman prize after her four golds at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Dujardin is the third horsewoman to win the main award after Pippa Funnell and Zara Phillips.

She told Sky Sports: "I have an incredible relationship with Valegro, after working with him for eight years. He is like my dance partner and he should be receiving the award with me but he is at home in his stable.

"My next big competition is the World Cup final in Las Vegas next year and then the Europeans and the Olympics."

Sochi Winter Olympic skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold was named runner-up, with 41-year-old European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey third. Fran Halsall (swimming), Laura Massaro (squash) and Joanna Rowsell (track cycling) were also nominated.

The World Cup-winning England rugby union side were the team of the year, which included Emily Scarratt, one of the LRS School Games Ambassadors for 2014-15.

Stephanie Slater, who won seven gold medals at the IPC European swimming championships was crowned disability sportswoman of the year.

Sue Frett, the 75-year-old founder of the Surrey branch of the Special Olympics Great Britain, won the community award and Louise Martin was awarded the lifetime achievement award in recognition of her association with the Commonwealth Games as a competitor, team manager and administrator.
