18 workplaces from around Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland came together on Friday 9th September to determine which team would claim Workplace Olympics gold at Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium.
The three hour Olympics style tournament, organised by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, saw track and field events combine with more traditional sports such as handball in order to determine who would be taking home the medals and glory this year. Friends and colleagues joined together, with teams of eight all getting opportunities at activities they may not have tried before.
Competitors were given the opportunity to take part in track and field events including the long jump, whilst a challenge zone allowed workplaces to learn new sports together. These included: table tennis, badminton, canoeing and golf.
The event offered businesses the opportunity to improve their physical activity in a friendly, fun environment. Beginning with a mass workout to avoid any injuries, the night continued with Olympic events and Brazilian inspired food in order to replicate the feel of Rio.
Battling it out on behalf of their temporary nations, the games saw countries including USA and China go head-to-head, with some impressive fancy dress seeing competitors embrace their temporary nations.
But despite the light-hearted nature of the night, there was the small matter of victory at the back of everyone's mind. This sort of competitive nature saw some falls in the always interesting sack race, though the on-hand first aiders were able to watch on from the stands as participants powered their way past the finish line.
After a hard fought and close night of action, it was Shepshed based Meggitt who claimed gold on behalf of their adopted nation, Germany. North West Leicestershire School Sport Partnership finished second with Harborough District Council joining them in the medals.
