The relationship between drinking and Christmas

Tis the season to get festive and Christmas is a time to celebrate and get Merry with your loved ones close around you. Alcohol is often seen as part and parcel of Christmas celebrations!

However, alcohol consumption can get the better of us during the holidays season, here's just some eye opener headlines:

  • More than half of us (53%) drink alcohol over the Christmas period even when we don't necessarily want to.
  • Those that drink more than they usually do over the festive season, 1 in 4 (27%) agree they feel guilty for drinking more and nearly a third (30%) agree that they feel run down as a result of drinking.
  • 1 in 5 (21%) of us are tired of drinking alcohol by Christmas Eve.

Even if you don't drink regular, excessive drinking over a small period can even have a detrimental impact on your health, one of which can increase your risks of having a heart attack!

Before your next drink, remember that men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week. This is the same as 6 pints of average strength beer a week. Space your drinking out over the course of the week and track your units like calories.

Take care and find ways to have Drink Free Days in your week during Christmas!
