Start training for 2021

23rd Sep, 2020

With no road races scheduled for the rest of the year I decided to take my off season early this year. I took a couple of weeks off the bike and now I have started training for 2021. I hope 2021 will be better than 2020 with a full race calendar.

Still no racing

10th Aug, 2020

I was meant to be doing a 3 day stage race in Belgium but it go cancelled due to an increase in covid cases. So I went with my team to a training camp based in Harrogate where we did 2 long days of riding in the Yorkshire dales. I have carried on training in case racing starts at the end of the season.

lockdown

11th May, 2020

I am continuing to train, going out on my bike most days. Cycling had indoor smart trainers and virtual reality races before the lock-down which were good for 'rainy days'. Now they are used even on sunny days. I am looking forward to proper races, hopefully later this year.

Coronavirus

13th Mar, 2020

I really didn't want to be writing this blog now, I wanted to be sat in the team car travelling to Belgium for the Nokere Koerse Junior Race in Belgium, however last night the Belgium Government cancelled all sporting events until at least 3 April, so the race is off.

I have several continental races scheduled for March-April-May and these are all looking in doubt.

I know Coronavirus is a global pandemic and a very serious public health issue with massive implications, but I can't help feeling a bit sad that I have done all this training and I won't get to compete in internationals!

I need to rethink my plans and goals for the season and keep a positive attitude.

I hope everyone is safe and healthy and the crisis is over with soon and we can get back to normal competition.

Start of the 2020 Race Season

8th Mar, 2020

Last week I did my first race of 2020 and my first race as a Junior. It was the Pimbo E/1/2 road race near Wigan in very windy conditions. I missed the winning move and our chase group were unable to close the gap on the leaders. I finished 13th.

Today I did the BRRT Spring Classic a 92km 2/3/4 road race near Bedford, again the weather was very windy. This time I managed to get in all the moves and stayed near the front, the tail wind up hill finish suited me and I got 2nd.

Next week I am going to Belgium to do the Nokere Koerse Junior Spring Classic UCI road race.

A New Year

9th Jan, 2020

I would like to wish everyone at LRS Go Gold a Happy New Year! I hope 2020 is going to be a good one!

I have just received my new junior race licence and I am looking forward to my first road race in February/March. Most youth racing is done on closed circuits with races generally only an hour or less in duration. Moving up to Junior the races may be up to three hours long and ridden on real roads. I am training hard and looking forward to the start of the season.

I am pleased to be joining the Z. Junior Race Team for 2020.

Training time

1st Nov, 2019

After a few weeks off, I have started training again. At half term I was fortunate to go to Mallorca and ride in warmer conditions. The weather was fantastic and it was nice to be able to ride in shorts. I got to do some good rides in the mountains including Sa Calobra.

Now back home, I have got my winter clothes out, fitted the mud guards and lights ready for the riding the roads of Rutland!

My last youth race!

30th Sep, 2019

I had my last road race of the season at Brands Hatch, this was also my last race as a youth, since I will be moving up to Junior next year. The race didn't go entirely to plan. I got in a few breakaways but then I got caught and I missed the decisive move. Since then I have had some time off the bike. I am really looking forward to racing next year in juniors.

Yesterday I went to see the Mens elite road race at the the World championships in Harrogate. The weather was awful but the race was inspiring.

Assen Youth Tour

21st Aug, 2019

A couple of weeks ago I competed in the Assen Youth Tour. A six-day international stage race located around Assen in Holland. I was completing as an older Nieuwelingen which is under 17, since they race in single year groups in Holland. There were about 80 riders in my category.

Stage 1 – short TT – 30th

Stage 2 – Criterium – 20th

Stage 3 – 75km Classic – 10th

Stage 4 – long TT – 11th

Stage 5 – Omloop – 25th

Stage 6 – Criterium 1st

I was pleased to win the final stage, but I was disappointed to get penalised and relegated to third for taking both hands off the handlebars in my over-exuberant celebration! I came 8th overall in the GC. I am pleased with how I did, and I learnt a lot about racing abroad.

Minehead GP

25th Jun, 2019

Saturday 22 June, the Minehead Grand Prix (Youth National Race), a town centre criterium race. Although not my favourite type of racing, the fast and furious pace makes them fun. The weather was sunny and warm for the evening race. The narrow roads and sharp corners mean the riders are often strung out in a single line. I was happy with my race, staying near the front and finishing third, just losing out on the sprint.

Isle of Man Youth Tour 2019

16th May, 2019

Last weekend I rode the Isle of Man Youth Tour, a three stage race over three days.

The first stage was a 1.6 km uphill prologue, I came 8th.

The second stage was the 40 km hilly road race. I came ninth, finishing in the lead group although one rider managed to get away. This moved me up to 5th on GC.

Stage three, a flat stage on the Southern 100 motorcycle circuit. The race was six laps, 40 km. On lap 5 I attacked and jumped across to a small group of leading riders, we were able to keep our lead and I won the sprint, taking the stage victory and finishing 2nd on GC. I am happy to get my first victory in a National.

I was pleased to be selected to represent the East Midlands Team in the Youth Tour of Scotland, a 3-day residential stage race in Perthshire. Day 1: Stage 1 the group stayed together, and it went to a sprint finish, I finished in the lead group. Day 2: Stage 2 was the Team Time Trial we worked well together, with all four riders finishing together in first place 8 seconds ahead of second. This put us on the podium as the leading team. Stage 3: I finished fourth just missing out on the podium. Day 3: Stage 4, I missed the breaks and finished in the main group losing my overall position from 4th in GC. The team finished 3rd overall out of twenty teams and I finished 10th overall out of 80 riders disappointed to drop down in team and individual on the final day.

East Midlands Cyclocross Championship

10th Dec, 2017

Last weekend I did the East Midlands Cyclocross Championship in Scunthorpe. The course was quite quick with lots of woodland single track. For much of the race I was in fourth place on my own. With about 2 laps to go the a chasing group of 3 riders managed to catch me, so there was now four of us riding for fourth place. There were a few attacks and I managed to get fifth place. More Cyclo-cross

17th Nov, 2017

With the road-racing season over and the nights drawing in. I have been doing quite a bit of indoor training on the turbo-trainer. At the weekends I have been doing cyclo-cross racing as a competitive way to maintain my fitness. There are a couple of local leagues. Last weekend I came third in the Notts and Derby under 16 race at Mansfield.

Cyclocross Weekend

28th Sep, 2017

On Saturday I did the Notts and Derby cyclocross race at Shipley Park. After a fast start the lead changed a couple of times and as the race settled down I found myself in a lead group with just one other rider. I sprinted into the last technical section to take my first win of the season.

On Sunday I did the Lincolshire cyclocross race at Spalding. This was a much flatter course. The racing was fast with one rider just ahead I managed to win a sprint with another rider to get second place.

Cyclocross

19th Sep, 2017

The road racing season has now ended and the cyclocross season has begun. Sunday was the first race in the inaugural Leicestershire Cyclocross League. The first race was in Corby, the sun shone and the weather stayed dry. I came 3rd in the under 16's race and I am looking forward to the next race at Misterton Hall. It is really good having races that are local.

15th Aug, 2017

Day 2; Stage 3: Another 3 lap road race with a big climb just before the finish. The leading group of 20+ stayed together and I finished 13th, also picking up some KoM points on the climbs and moved up the general classification

Day 3; Stage 4: A fast (25mph) crit race around a short circuit in Letterkenny. The leading group stayed together despite several attacks. I stayed near the front and positioned myself well on the final corner finishing 3rd which got me onto the podium for the final stage. I finished 12th in the GC – A good tour!

Doncaster Grand Prix

26th Jun, 2017

The Doncaster Crit is a race around the centre of the town on a short technical circuit with tight corners. The race attracts a large field of riders. I didn't have the best start and missed the lead group who managed to get away. I was in the second group of about six riders with my team mate Bryn. The two of us attacked and managed to get away. Working together we opened up a gap on the group behind but we didn't manage to catch the small group in front. I finished 6th in a good tough race.

Lincoln Criterium - Friday May 12th

6th Jun, 2017

Fortunately the rain stopped before the start of my race, a Friday evening criterium around the closed roads of Lincoln city centre. It was a short tight circuit with a technical cobbled section on the start/finish. The race was a mixed field of U16 & U14 boys and girls. The race split right from the start with 3 riders away. I was in the chasing group, the race didn't really change much after that. I won the sprint in my group and was the second U14 boy in the overall.

Isle of Man Youth Tour 2017

7th May, 2017

Over the May Day Bank Holiday I went to the Isle of Man to take part in the three day tour:

Day 1: Prologue on Douglas Promenade 30th place, not my strongest event.

Day 2: Flat race in Jurby, unlucky to get caught behind a crash 21st place.

Day 3: Hilly stage, was in the third group 10th on stage, which moved me up to 12th overall. Happy with that!
