What is Softball?

Softball is a direct descendant of Baseball, only the ball is bigger.

There are two types of softball. Slow-pitch softball (the most common form), the ball must arch on its path to the batter, there are 10 players in a team, and bunting and stealing are prohibited. Fastpitch softball, the pitch is fast, there are nine players on the field at one time, and bunting and stealing are permitted. Softball rules vary somewhat from those of baseball. Two major differences are that the ball must be pitched underhand and seven innings instead of nine constitute a regulation game.

Visit the Baseball/Softball UK website to find out how you can get involved.

  • It was invented in 1887 in Chicago as an indoor game and the earliest known softball game was played in Chicago, Illinois on Thanksgiving Day, 1887.
