Workplace Health Needs Assessment

It can be hard to understand where to prioritise investment in staff health and wellbeing, especially when moving above and beyond basic health and safety requirements.

This is where the Workplace Health Needs Assessment (WHNA) can help.

What is a 'Workplace Health Needs Assessment'?

The Workplace Health Needs Assessment (WHNA) is a tested tool for organisations of all types and sizes. It uses standardised survey questions to identify the key priority areas of employee health, including healthy eating, physical activity, smoking and alcohol awareness and sleep and stress management. The results can be used to shape the development of a health and wellbeing action plan that employees value and feel is reflective of their needs.

Included as part of the Wellbeing at Work programme, Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport (LRS) can support eligible organisations across Leicestershire to implement the WHNA and create a simplified interpretation of data free of charge*.

Organisations who complete a Workplace Health Needs Assessment are also eligible to begin working towards the Award element of the Wellbeing at Work Charter.

The Workplace Health Needs Assessment is sourced from Public Health England & Healthy Working Futures (2017) 'Workplace Health Needs Assessment'.

*Costs apply for private sector organisations and organisations based outside of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland (including Oadby and Wigston). Please refer to the Wellbeing at Work Support Package at the bottom of this page for the pricing structure.

How does the Workplace Health Needs Assessment work?

Step 1

Employees complete a Workplace Health Needs Assessment via a unique URL supplied by LRS. Questions are asked about physical activity, healthy eating, alcohol consumption, stress and sleep management, and more.

The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Paper copies can be provided if required (useful if staff do not have direct access to a computer).

Step 2

LRS will complete a full analysis of survey findings and produce a comprehensive report with tailored recommendations to improve for each recognised area of health and wellbeing. The report signposts to both national and local initiatives in place to support workplace health. The report will be returned to the organisation within 4 weeks.

Step 3

LRS and partners can support an organisation to produce a health and wellbeing strategy and/or action plan that reflects the needs of their employees. Organisations have the option of accessing the Wellbeing at Work Support Package*, which includes a range of health activities and information / advice. The WHNA can be repeated after 12-24 months to demonstrate impact.
